#CHOOSE TO CHALLENGE STEREOTYPING URBAN WOMEN

According to BBC, this year’s theme for International Women’s Day is #ChoosetoChallenge. The idea behind it is that a challenged world is an alert world and individually, we are all responsible for our own thoughts and actions.

Nighat Dad, a lawyer, also stated the same issue, after there was a hue and cry over some of the slogans of the Aurat March that the general public could not digest. The patriarchy lovers only see women getting out on the streets, distracted by their attires, loud voices and rebellious slogans, but can they really put their egos aside and ask the story behind the angst? Not at all. For most, these are just tantrums that need to be controlled by their husbands, brothers or fathers.

Women bear the brunt of the exploitative patriarchal structures; be it in the village or metropolis. The idea that everyone can make choices about their life, even women, is still foreign. Choices about marriage, when and who to marry or not, about career, to work or not, about children, about their own bodies, about their devotion, about money, about how they live their life, about what they want to do after retirement. They need to be accepted and respected for whatever they do.

So I #choosetochallenge the negative stereotyping of urban women. If they are coming on the streets, it is alarming!

But summing it up we have drifted far away from what a tolerant society should be like. They are protesting because abuse and injustice is prevalent. They march to represent their rural sisters who cannot do this themselves. Let’s take our pink glasses off and put on the purple ones to see the truth, feel compassion and also celebrate empowered women, at least that one day.

Happy International Women’s day to all
